 The National Science Foundation is organizing the World Science Day 2009 – Schools Programme under the theme ‘Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for National Development’. The objective of this programme is to popularize science amongst school children to cultivate an appreciation of the value of science, scientific method, technology and the integral role that science plays in modern society, The Minister of Science & Technology Tissa Vitarana said at a media briefing held at Government Information Department today (04).
He pointed out that satellite programmes for school children in various districts of the country to showcase their scientific knowledge, innovation and advancement by participating in competitions such as poster presentations, drama, digital story (convey scientific concepts) role play (play the character of an eminent scientist) was conducted related to the theme.
The Main Programme to celebrate the World Science Day – Schools Programme has been scheduled for Friday 06 November 2009 at the BMICH Main Hall from 8.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.
The Minister of Science & Technology Tissa Vitarana and the Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha, will be the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively at this event.
Prof. P.W. Epasinghe the Advisor to his Excellency the President of Sri Lanka will be the Guest Speaker.
Awards will be presented to the winners of the following competitions.
· World Science Day 2009 – Schools competitions
· National Olympiad competitions
· Science Research Project competitions
· National winners of the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair
· Star Rating awards for School Science Societies based on their performance in the year 2008
· NSF Award for teachers for promoting science amongst school children
· National Award for Popularization of Science
1200 school children with their teachers are expected to participate at this event from all over the country including North and East. Eminent scientists, educationists and media personnel will be among the invitees. |
