Leave for voting at Presidential Election |

The Presidential polls will take place on Tuesday, January 26th 2010.Voting will commence from 7.am and conclude at 4.00 pm Under the provisions of Section 110 of the Presidential Elections Act No. 15 of 1981 regarding grant of leave to employees for casting their vote they must apply for leave in writing and also all respective employers should prepare a statement of employees who have applied for leave in writing with time of period and those who are granted leave in writing to cast vote.
If anyone fails to comply with above statement will be guilty an offence who will be produced for a trial before Magistrate, be liable to a fine not exceeding five hundred rupees or to imprisonment or else to both imprisonment and such fine.
In terms of the provisions of the above section requested employees in writing should be considered as special full pay leave in the case of all employees including casual employees and should be outside the employees normal leave entitlement.
The period of time available to employees for this purpose has to be determined by the employer, and also all employers both in public and private sector are kindly requested to comply with legal requirement and grant leave to employees to cast their votes at the forthcoming Presidential Election.
