The much awaited sensational political debate on a private television scheduled last night on the alleged fraudulent arm deals involving retired Gen. Sarath Fonseka ended on an inconclusive note plunging millions of enthusiastic viewers into sadness.
Appearing on behalf of Gen. Fonseka UNP Parlimentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara opposed the presence of two Government members claiming that he came for a one to one debate with a government member.
Interjecting at that point the Moderator of Swarnavahini's " Rathu Ira" programme maintained that both the government and the opposition were informed that they could be represented by two members on either side.
For the government, Wimal Weeravansa the man who threw the challenge was accompanied by Minister Rajitha Senaratne to the studio.
Jayasekara said he was prepared to debate the issue with either of them and not with both. Weerawansa then offered to give more time to Jayasekara to fill the vacuum of a supporting member for Jayasekara.
At this point minister Senaratne joined the fray and the Moderator interviened to bring order. The verbal battle heightened and the Moderator moved for an interval break.
When they resumed Jayasekara remained firm on his stance refusing to debate with both. Persuations made by Weerawansa, Senaratne and the Moderator fell on the deaf ears of Jayasekara. Then, Jayasekara stood up and walked away as Weerawansa claimed that Jayasekara was running away in fear of the debate. Thus ended the debate much awaited by millions of viewers in an inconclusive manner. |
