The United Nations Security Council late Monday called for an "immediate and unconditional" cease-fire between Israel and Palestinian militants. The call comes amid reports that military action by both sides has slowed in recent hours, International Media reports said.

Introducing the panelists was Mr. Sunimal Fernando, Advisor to H.E. the President of Sri Lanka and Chairman/Board of Studies of the BCIS. Prof. Madhav Das Nalapath of Manipal University, Dr. Suresh Prabhu was a former Union Minister under the Vajpayee Government and a member of the Shiv Sena, Dr. Swapan Dasgupta was introduced as a senior journalist and political commentator, Dr. Seshadri Chari was from the RSS and National Convenor of the Foreign Policy cell of the BJP. Dr. Subramaniam Swamy (Former Union Cabinet Minister & Chairman of BJP Committee for Strategic Action) did not require any introduction and Mr. Sunimal Fernando summed up his popularity by saying that if Dr. Swamy was to contest an election in Sri Lanka he would win with a resounding victory.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has telephoned the newly elected President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo to offer congratulations on his decisive victory at the recently concluded Presidential elections. Having secured 53.15% of the vote,  Widodo emerged as the clear winner over his rival,  Prabowo Subianto who secured 48.85% of the vote.

The 47th annual Esala Festival of the historic Sri Devol Maha Devalaya,  Seenigama will commence on July 31 with the "Kap Situweema" ceremony.  Before commencement of the Perahera an all night pirith chanting ceremony will be held on August 30 followed by a Sanghika dana to the Maha Sangha.

Sri Lanka Scout Association will host the Colombo Centenary Scout Jamboree to celebrate  100 years of Scouting in Colombo in 2014. Scouting in Colombo started in 1914 by Mr M.F.G. Stevens at the 1st Colombo Governor’s Own Scout Group.

Mangroves have been declared as natural nature reserves. There are 21 Mangrove varieties in Sri Lanka near Lagoons and 48 near estuaries.

The General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level examination 2014 will be held from August 5 - 29 in 2120 centres island-wide, while the Grade 5 scholarship exam will be held on August 17.

Three hundred and fifty (350) recruits belonging to the 216th Regular Intake of the Sri Lanka Navy passed out at SLNS Vidura on Saturday (26). Commander Eastern Naval Area Rear Admiral Rohan Amarasinghe graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, Commandant of SLNS Vidura Commodore Noel Kalubowila and the senior naval officers, parents and well-wishers were also present on the occasion.
