The SAARC Film Festival will take place from 26th to 31st of May 2013 at the National Film Corporation Cinema Hall in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The SAARC Cultural Centre, in keeping with its mandate of promoting culture in the region through different modes of art, will showcase films from the region as cultural expressions at its forthcoming SAARC Film Festival said Mr.P.L.W.Samarasinghe, Director of the SAARC Cultural Centre at the media briefing held at the Auditorium of the Government Information Department, Monday morning. (20). The Film Festival will give all Member States an opportunity to screen some of the best films from the region he said.
The SAARC Film Festivals held in Colombo, has over the last two years gained momentum for promoting some of the best films from the SAARC Region. The SAARC Film Festival marks an event unique to the region, where through the medium of cinema, the festival has become forum for people interaction, as well as understanding and savoring of culture through the medium of cinema, where films from the SAARC Countries, will not merely be a tool of entertainment, but rather one of cultural awareness. A reputed panel of adjudicators select the best film and awards are given as incentive to continue producing good films for the region.
An award will be given to the Best Feature Film and documentary Film – which will be adjudicated by a panel of international Jury from Russia, Iran and Singapore. Further there will be a special workshop organized by the Centre for Directors and other artists of these films as well as experts in the Film Industry on the 29th of May at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute..
Last year, nominations were received from Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s nomination of 'Akasa Kusum' , bagged first place, while the award winning Documentary “ Saving Face” from Pakistan won the Best Documentary Film.
Chairman of the National Film Corporation Asoka Serasinghe also spoke.
The SAARC Film Festival is a treat to all film enthusiasts and is open to the public free of charge.
