The Ministry of Power and Energy has taken a new step to allow the domestic consumers to produce their own power requirements.
The Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka said that the Ministry has decided to permit the generation of power within households with alternative sources such as wind or solar.
Consumers will have the option of producing energy more than they require. Excess power could be sold to the Electricity Board. The power generation and transmission in Sri Lanka is government owned and handled through a public board at a subsidised rate. The government targets to increase its household distribution of electricity to another 170,000 houses within the next few years.
Accordingly, households will have the opportunity of generating energy with the help of turbines where wind is rife. Solar cells will be issued to areas where solar power can be produced.
