Jaffna Onion fetches good price in the southern market |

With the opening of the Jaffna - Kandy A-9 highway following the end of war, the red onion harvest of Jaffna is reaching south. The farmers bring their harvest to Dambulla Special Economic Center, a major wholesale food market in the country, to obtain better prices.
Around 100,000 kilos of red onion reach the economic center daily The purchasing price from farmers at the center is around Rs. 55 per kilo.
Jaffna is famous for red onion and there is a god demand for Jaffna variety of red onion in the rest of the country. However, the war prevented the commodity to reach south for many years. The defeat of terrorism has helped immensely to the Jaffna populace as various products from Jaffna are reaching the south regularly now. Further, the local tourism is also flourishing in the Jaffna district. According to security sources more than five hundred buses plying towards Jaffna carrying pilgrims and travelers every week. |
