Last night (12), Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) successfully outwits an LTTE attempt to crossover their stranded cardres to Wanni area from their hideouts in the jungles of North of Trincomalee.
According to the Security sources, the SLN’s Fast Attack Craft (FAC) patrolling in the Eastern seas last night around 10.30 has observed two clusters of Sea Tiger boats moving towards Pulmoddai area. The Sea Tiger Boats launched an attack when the FAC's moved in to investigate. Although the LTTE boats fired at the naval craft, the FAC succeeded in a direct hit sinking one of the boats.
Defence services say that the Intercepted radio communications among the LTTE cardres have revealed that three LTTE cadres were killed and ten others suffered injuries in the incident. One SLN personal was killed in the encounter.
Media Centre for National Security states that one Sea Tiger boat was completely destroyed while several of the other boats were severely damaged by the FAC fire during the exchange of fire lasted around three hours. Navy sources also confirm that with more Sea Tiger boats damaged. The Sea Tigers fled the area with their damaged boats and injured cardres.
The Navy took steps to establish a blockade to prevent LTTE sea movement off Nayaru and Kokilai Seas in the Eastern coastal belt.
Meanwhile, the defence sources said that small groups of terrorists are still wandering in the jungles in Kadavana looking for an opportunity to crossover to Wanni. However, both army and navy have been able to establish effective blockades over the possible escape routes and so far have been able to foil many such LTTE attempts, inflicting heavy casualties to the terrorists. |
