The Italian Police have re-arrested eight suspects for offences under Italian and International law, including extortion to support a terrorist organization who were released by the local Magistrate on the grounds of insufficient evidence to prove their complicity with the LTTE.

These 8 were arrested with several other suspects in Italy recently in a country wide raid launched by the Italian Police.

However, the Italian Secret Police, headed by Dr. Antonio S. Bersone and Dr. Missou, invoking Italian Anti-Terror laws rearrested all eight and produced them before a Magistrate in Naples who was convinced by the evidence produced that they were indeed involved in supporting the terrorist activities of the LTTE through extortion and remanded them, media reports revealed.

Two were arrested in Palermo, three each in Bologna and Regi Millia.

Sri Lanka Ambassador to Italy, Hemantha Warnakulasuriya said that with all the terrorist suspects in Italy now in remand the LTTE's funding arm has been virtually put out off action.

More arrests are expected in Italy and in elsewhere, as European countries are on the alert over the terrorist activities of the LTTE in Europe and back in Sri Lanka, European based news sources reports.

Recent killings of innocent civilians in Sri Lanka by the LTTE are said tohave triggered a more intensified crack-down on the LTTE in many European capitals, sources revealed.
