The Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s Disciplinary Committee appointed to probe into alleged charges relating to a Samurdhi Officer being tied to a tree in Kelaniya has acquitted the former Deputy Minister of Highways Mr. Mervin Silva.  The three member committee which handed over his report to President Mahinda Rajapaksa has stated that there was no evidence that the alleged act was carried out by the Deputy Minister, and he was responsible for punishing the Samurdhi officer following an anti-dengue campaign.

The price of 12.5 kg Cylinder of Gas has been reduced by the authorities and the revision was effective from midnight yesterday.The Consumer Affair Authority said the price of a cylinder of domesticGas was reduced by 46 rupees.

332km length of Northern Roadways to be developed with Chinese funding of US $ 3.5 billion

A major road rehabilitation and development project is to be undertaken by the Government with Chinese financial assistance in the Northern province. Accordingly, 332km length of roads inclusive of Kandy- Jaffna A9 highway will be developed and modernized on a proposal by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Former Minister Mr. Lakshman Jayakody passes away.

Former Minister Lakshman Jayakody, who was in poor health for a couple of months passed away yesterday evening at the Colombo National Hospital. Mr. Jayakody got elected to Divulapitiya electorate in the 1970 General Election, and served as the Deputy Minister of  Defence in Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s government during 1970 to 1977 and was also the Minister of Buddha Sasana and Cultural Affairs in the People’s Alliance Government during 1994 to 2000. Mr. Jayakody was one of the senior members of the SLFP and has also served as a vice president of the Party. Furthermore, he was also serving as a senior presidential Adviser to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

ImageAt a meeting of the District Development Committee held under the chairmanship of Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa at the Mullaitivu District Secretariat Sunday it was revealed that the fresh milk production drive launched in Mullaitivu to develop dairy farming and uplift the living standards of resettled families has proved a great success with dairy farmers recording a production of 130,000 litres of cow milk during the first seven months of this year.

Constitutional Amendment Bill before Supreme Court for its determination

The Draft Bill for amending the Constitution in accordance with yesterday’s Cabinet Decision was taken up before the five -judges bench of Supreme Court this morning. Registrar of the Supreme Court said that the court would notify its determination as to whether the proposed Bill is inconsistent with the Constitution to the Speaker and the President within 24 hours as required by the Constitution.

Japanese funded Tourist Jetty in Negombo.

A new Jetty is being built in the Negombo lagoon with Japanese assistance amounting to Rs. 314 Million.  The construction of the Jetty funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency will provide facilities for tourists to have a boat tour in the lagoon and see the enormous resources in flora and fauna, especially in its mangroves. The construction work, overseen by the Lank Reclamation Department, is expected to be completed next month.

Govt. takes all measures to obtain reparation for the tortured Housemaid

The government has blacklisted the Employment Agency which sent the tortured Housemaid Ariyawathie to Saudi Arabia with fraudulent documentation.  Meanwhile the Saudi Arabian English Daily, “Arab News” reported that medical reports pertaining to the surgery and tests carried out on Ariyawathie have been received by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Saudi Arabia. The newspaper also added that A video recording of her evidence as well as the Arabic translation of evidence has already been received by the Saudi Government.

The government spokesman, Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told news.lk that the Cabinet of Ministers at its special meeting held Monday unanimously approved the draft Constitutional amendments to be passed as an urgent Bill in Parliament.

Emergency Cabinet Meeting to discuss Constitutional Amendments

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has called for an urgent Cabinet Meeting today.  The meeting is expected to discuss the constitutional amendment proposals. The proposals include amendments to Article 31 of the Constitution under Clause 2 of this article the term of office of the President is restricted to twice only. The proposals also include to replacing the present Constitutional Council with a five-member committee.

Sri Lanka to get 3 D Echo Cardiology Machine for the first time

ImageColombo National hospital is to receive two 3D echo cardiology machines and it is the first of its kind to be installed in the country’s health sector. Cardiac ailment is one of the major factors that contribute to deaths caused by non communicable diseases in the country. According to hospital sources over 290 persons die daily due to non communicable diseases in the country.

File PhotoSri Lanka won the final of a tri-series one-day international tournament Saturday beating India by 74 runs after Tillakaratne Dilshan hit his eighth ODI hundred and Thisara Perera and Suraj Randiv took three wickets each.Sri Lanka scored 299-8 in 50 overs with Dilshan scoring 110 from 115 balls with 12 boundaries and a six. Captain Kumar Sangakkara scored 71 off 62 balls.
