The first fish canning factory of Sri Lanka will be commissioned on the 3rd of next month. The factory has been established in Galle.
This is a joint venture between the Sri Lanka Fisheries Corporation and a private institution. Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dr. Rajitha Senarathna said the factory has a capacity of producing 10,000 cans of fish per day and it will be increased to 20,000 in the future.
The Minister said that in addition to the Galle Fish Canning Factory, 3 more fish canning factories will also be established in the country as soon ass possible.
The daily consumption amounts to about 50,000 cans. The Minister said that with the production of canned fish locally as Sri Lanka has sufficient fish resources, a large amount of foreign exchange being spent for import of can fish can be saved. (niz)
