Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa said that the government ambitious agricultural development programme has resulted in having an excess of rice and vegetable production and steps will be taken soon to export the excess rice and vegetables.
The Minister said that the government will provide special concessions to the companies that come forward to export rice and vegetables. The Minister made these comments participating in a seminar organized by the National Council for Economic Development of the Ministry of Finance and Planning. Fruits and Vegetable cultivators, processors, exporters and producers of seed varieties attended this seminar held at the auditorium of the Ministry of Economic Development recently.
The Minister said that the fertilizer subsidy has contributed for increase in production and reducing the cost of the producers. The Minister appealed to the exporters to take adequate steps to export vegetables. He requested the industrialists to use local raw materials for processing and packing vegetables and fruits for export. He also said that the farmers could be encouraged to produce standard products.
The Minister further said that commercial level cultivators should be ensured sustainable prices to encourage them continue their cultivation activities. He said that Sri Lanka has achieved self sufficiency in the production of maize, and plans have been made to increase production of liquid milk in accordance with instructions given by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in this regard.(niz).
