    January 02, 2016

The electricity provision of the country will reach 100 percent by January 31, Power and Renewable Energy Ministry sources revealed. This target could be achieved with the implementation of a programme to provide electricity to low income earners who cannot afford electricity.

The programme under the theme Ratama Eliyai Andura Duralai was initiated to provide electricity at concessionary rates to complete the electricity provision within three months, under the directions of Power and Energy Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.

Ministry sources revealed that there are around 200,000 houses in the country without electricity, due to the economic difficulties of the owners. These people will benefit under this programme.

Sources also revealed that under the“Ratama Eliyai Andura Duralai” programme, electricity provision of the Polonnaruwa District will reach 100 percent on January 12 while the other districts are on course to achieving this target by January 31. Ministry sources also stated that this is history in the making as Sri Lanka is the only country that could complete its 100 percent electricity provision in the region. It was also revealed that the ministry’s next target is to provide electricity to consumers at a low prize.
