    1,210 Rural Bridges are being constructed

    The government has planned to nationalize 1,210 rural bridges before the end of next year. These bridges will be constructed under the program of ‘Constructing Rural Bridges’ which is carried out by the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government.

    This program is implemented with foreign funds. The project will be carried out in three phases and bridges costing more than Rs45, 000 million will be constructed in each province.

     

    Constructing rural bridges will ensure the safety of the rural community and enhance their way of living. In addition the government aims to improve the national economy of the country using the maximum resources in rural areaswhichhave been utilized so far.

     

    Under the first phase, construction of 210 bridges wereinaugurated in Western, Southern, Central, Uva, North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces. 95% of those constructions are completed by now. Those 210 bridges will be opened within this year. Rs6, 843.00 million is to be spent for the first phase and this is funded by the United States.


    Constructions of 537 bridges are to be inaugurated under the second phase. 391 of them have already started their construction and the progress is 15%.Rs20,000.00 million will be spent for these constructions and this is also funded by the United States.


    Under the third phase, construction of 463 bridges is to be initiated and 230 of them have already started.  10% of those constructions are complete now. Rs18,600.00 million will be spent and is funded by Netherlands.
    The number of rural bridges inaugurated in each province is as follows.
