    October 24, 2016

Lanka Government Network (LGN) 2.0 has been proposed by ICTA to be implemented from 2016-2018.

It aims to provide high speed internet connection by leveraging on the National Backbone Network to government organizations to enable the Digital government plan.  The three year project is estimated to cost Rs 12,737million. The cabinet of ministers gave approval for this proposal said CO-Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka.

This is intended to be the information highway that connects government organizations and the network that would seamlessly deliver government services to citizens, business and other government organizations.

It is specially intended to provide high speed and secure connectivity for all e-Government initiatives.  It would be used for opening LGN backbone for providing free Wi-Fi services to the people. The lack of speed in the LGN was the main obstacle to successfully operate and was inadequate to digitize the economy as envisaged by the government.
