Govt.allocates Rs.300 million to build fisheries harbours and anchorages

    July 09, 2014

The Government has allocated Rs. 3,000 million in the 2014 Budget to develop and build fisheries harbours and anchorages island wide.

Accordingly construction work on the Fisheries Harbour in Kalametiya which was earlier disrupted due to various reasons and the Kaikawala anchorage began under the patronage of Minister Dr.Rajitha Senarathna.

The construction work on the anchorage at Kaikawala commenced after the report of the feasibility study was received. Rs.200 million has been allocated for the construction of the Kaikawala anchorage and Rs.9 million for the Fisheries Harbour in Kalametiya.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dr.Rajitha Senarathna said that the anchorages and the harbours cannot be built in the way, the buildings are being constructed. They have to be handled very carefully; otherwise the place will come under sea erosion. Therefore he urged the people to protect them as their families as well as individuals will be benefited.

“We are also making arrangements to fulfill all needs and wants in all fisheries harbours and anchor lodges and equip them with all modern facilities.

We hope to develop all fisheries harbours, anchor lodges and fish landing centres island wide to uplift the fisheries industry and measures are in place to complete the construction of all fisheries harbours by 2015,” he said.
