    November 22, 2014

More than 24,000 undergraduates would benefit from 60 new hostels to be completed by September 2015 and the construction of about 30 hostels was completed under the first phase of the project and the first hostel 'Sarasavi Mandura' will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa today (22) at the Rajarata University.

The government had to pay Rs. 1,200 million annually for rented accommodation for undergrads at present, but it was difficult to find suitable places in the surroundings of Rajarata, Sabaragamuwa and Wayamba Universities.

In keeping with a concept of Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake, Ministry launched the 60-hostel project to save the vast sums spent on rent and provide children with comfortable and safe accommodation. 400 students each could be accommodated in new four storeyed hostel with all modern facilities. The cost of one building was Rs. 220 million and the construction company had given a 50-year warranty. (ST/KH)
