    Sri Lanka celebrates birth anniversary of Lord Baden Powell

    The statue of Lord Baden Powell, founder of the International scouting movement  was unveiled at the water fountain park in Batticaloa on Sunday (22), marking the 158th birth anniversary of Lord Baden Powell. The statue of Lord Baden Powell which was installed in 1988 had to be removed due to road extension work


    Sri Lanka Scout Association’s Batticaloa District Commissioner P. Anandaraja unveiled  and garlanded the statue followed by religious observances by Hindu, Catholic and Islamic religious dignitaries.


    Marking the occasion, the Scouts and Girl Guides went in procession from the venue along the Batticaloa clock tower road up to the Government Teachers Training College.

     

    The Sri Lanka Scout Association,  the national Scouting organization of Sri Lanka, was founded in 1912, and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1953. The Ceylon Scout Council was incorporated by the Act No 13 of 1957.

     

    Batticaloa District Assistant Commissioners V. Pratheepan, I. Christy, P. Sasirooban, A. Alosius, I. Uthayakumar, Director of Education K. Baskaran, Divisional Education Officer K. Sugumaran and Batticaloa Municipality Engineer T. Thevatheepan participated.
