    Sri Lanka at UN-Habitat session today Featured

    Sri Lanka will participate for the 25th session of Governing Council of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Kenya, Nairobi on April 17, the National Housing Development Authority said in a press release.

    The release said: The 25th Session will be held in Nairobi, Kenya from April 17th-23rd. Sri Lanka is one of the pioneers of setting up of the UN Habitat designated for the Housing and Human Settlement activities of the UN member countries.

     

    More than 250 member countries including Sri Lanka will take part in UN Habitat Governing Council session.

     

    The Sri Lankan delegation consists of National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) Chairman L. S. Palansuriya, Housing and Samurdhi Ministry Director (Housing) Nandani Samarawickrama, NHDA District Manager K. Jeganathan and High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Kenya and representative of UN Habitat Sri Lanka,Krishnamoorthi.

     

    "The contribution of UN-Habitat to the post-2015 development agenda: promoting sustainable urban development and human settlements" is the main theme of the conference and first sub theme of the conference will be "Enhancing urban-rural linkages across the continuum of human settlements to harness the transformative power of urbanization for sustainable development."

     

    The second sub theme of the sessions will be "The role of UN-Habitat in the post-2015 development agenda."

     

    The Sri Lankan delegation will make a special presentation on the success of housing and settlement activities of Sri Lanka for the last decade. With this presentation they will make a special emphasis on 50,000 housing programme implemented by the NHDA and the Housing and Samurdhi Ministry with the guidance of Housing and Samurdhi Minister Sajiith Premadasa.

     

    The 50,000 housing programme will be implemented with the limited financial expenditure with State and maximum participation of housing beneficiaries and their savings. This programme will inaugurate in all electorates within the 100 days government development programme.

     

    The Sri Lankan delegation will expect to meet all UN high officials on human settlements and other delegates and officials of the UN representative countries to get the assistance and share the experience of the National Housing Programme of Sri Lanka.
