    Workshop on Commercialization of Natural Resources

    The Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Section E-2 (chemical sciences) is organizing a one-day workshop on June 4 at the SLAAS headquarters to strengthen the public and private sector partnership in bringing sustainable economic development to the country.

    The workshop will address value addition, product development, and commercialization aspects of the natural resources of Sri Lanka. The main focus of the workshop will be on minerals, polymers and rubber, apparel and plant based materials.

     

    "In order for Sri Lanka to be competitive in the global market, more emphasis should be given in developing value added products. In recognizing the dire need of such initiative the workshop has been organized drawing a panel of resource persons with expertise," the organizers said in a news release connected to the event.

     

    "The workshop will create a platform for stakeholder to share their ideas and innovations in respective fields. Mr. Rizvi Zaheed, Managing Director, Hayleys Agriculture Holdings Ltd. and Executive Director, Hayleys PLC will be the Chief Guest while Prof. Veranja Karunaratne, Senior Professor in Chemistry, University of Peradeniya; Associate Director, Science and Strategic Relations, SLINTEC will deliver the key note address at this workshop."

     

    The distinguished panel of resource persons are Mr. Udena Wickremesooriya, Director, Brandix Lanka Limited, Prof. Vijaya Kumar, President, NASSL; President, Science Council of Asia, Dr. Uthuman Farook?, Chief Operating Officer, Dankotuwa Porcelain PLC, Royal Fernwood Porcelain Ltd. , Dr. Upul Ratnayake, Head, Raw Rubber Process Development and Chemical Engineering, Rubber Research Institute, Sri Lanka, Prof. Ajith de Alwis, Professor of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Dr. Anushka Wijesinha, Special Advisor on Industrial Policy and Youth Entrepreneurship to the Minister of Industry and Commerce and Prof. Namal Priyantha, Senior Professor in Chemistry, University of Peradeniya.
