The Working Committee of the opposition United National Party is to hold a crucial meeting tomorrow under the chairmanship of party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe. Sources from Sirikotha said that tomorrow’s meeting is to be held with a view to initiate stern action to remove the rebel elements from the party.
The party sources said that the working committee will discuss the disciplinary action against the UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa and MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, who was recently removed from the post of Deputy Chief Whip of the Party in the Parliament.
The party sources also said that the final decision on suspension of membership of Sajith Premadasa and Dayasiri Jayasekera is also to be discussed at this working committee meeting.
Meanwhile, members loyal to the party leader have said that all efforts to correct the rebels have failed and the party needed to take stern action to avoid the rebels misleading party members and
disrupting party activities.
They said that Sajith Premadasa is currently conducting meetings with the party's local government members to solicit their support for a membership drive initiated by him. The UNP leadership and General Secretary have earlier said that meetings should not be organized
without approval and that party members should not attend such meetings. (niz)
