Sajith accused of betraying his loyalists

Sajith Premadasa

Deputy Leader of the United National Party Sajith Premadasa has betrayed his loyalists once again.  In this instance he has betrayed his loyalists who claim that the recent leadership elections were not held in a free and fair manner.

Despite his supporters’ insistence that the elections were rigged, Premadasa has admitted that the party's Working Committee election held in December was conducted in a fair manner.

In an interview with Sunday Sinhala newspaper he has praised UNP General Secretary

Tissa Attanayake for ensuring the election held in a fair manner. Premadasa has noted that the only issue related to the election was the ballot papers not carrying a number as in other major elections.

Contrary to this view, those who oppose to the Leader of the United National Party and supportive of Sajith Premadasa, including MP Dayasiri Jayasekera claimed that the ballot papers were not numbered and accuse the General Secretary Tissa Attanayake for manipulating the elections.

On earlier occasions Sajith Premadasa had been accused of betraying his loyalists such as MP Buddhika Pathirana and Provincial Councillor when they were suspended from the Party by keeping silent.  He is also being accused of failing to protest against the suspension of MP Dayasiri Jayasekera and removal of Jayasekera from the post of the Deputy Opposition Whip of Parliament.

It is also widely believed that the majority of those who stoned and damaged the party headquarters on the day the elections were held was UNPers loyal to Sajith Premadasa and Premadasa did not take any action to protect them when they were taken into Police custody and cases were filed against them.
