The United National Party is to call for explanation from the UNP Parliamentarians and the electoral organizers who failed to participate in the May Day rally held by the UNP in Jaffna.

The General Secretary of the United National Party Tissa Attanayake told a media conference held in Colombo yesterday that a report on the attendance of members and electoral organizers has been provided to the Working Committee of the party, and accordingly on the instructions of the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, the working committee has decided to call for explanations from the Parliamentarians and the electoral organizers who failed to attend the party’s  May Day rally in Jaffna.  Attanayake said that further action will be taken upon receipt of response from the relevant members.

Meanwhile, on a separate issue the former Deputy Leader of the United National Party Karu Jayasuriya has filed a petition in courts against the party's decision to take disciplinary action against him.

Jayasuriya has filed the petition in the Colombo District Court seeking an enjoining order against the UNP's disciplinary committee decision to call for explanation from him.

Reports said the party's disciplinary committee has last week in writing asked Jayasuriya for explanation for criticizing the report presented by President's Counsel Srinath Perera on the attack on the UNP headquarters, Sirikotha, last December during the election for office bearers.

Additional District Judge C.J. Rajaratne is to take the petition for consideration today. (niz)
