SLFP to suspend membership of politicians involved in crimes

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is also the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has suggested to suspend the party membership of any public representative charged with crimes including rape, until conclusion of judicial procedures.

 

Party sources said that concerned by the increasing number of ruling party politicians involved in crimes including rape of minors, the President presented a proposal to the Central Working Committee meeting of the SLFP yesterday suggesting to suspend their memberships in the party until legal procedures are concluded.

 

The Central Working Committee met at Temple Trees yesterday under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

 

Minister of Youth Affairs and Skilled Development and the Treasurer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Dullas Alahapperuma said that the party central committee unanimously approved the proposal presented by the party leader.  

 

Accordingly, if the charged person is holding a position in the party, another person is to be appointed to act in the post, until the conclusion of the judiciary procedures.

 

The Central Working Committee has decided to authorize the Chief Ministers to remove provincial councilors accused of criminal charges from their positions in the Council. It has also decided not to nominate anyone who is accused of corruption when granting nominations for the provincial council elections. In this connection, it has been decided to obtain police reports on former provincial councilors and new nomination applicants.(niz)
