22 Independent Groups have submitted deposits for the Elections

The Additional Commissioner of Elections R.M.A.L.Ratnayake said that already 22 independent groups have submitted their deposits for the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provincial Council Elections. He said that the date of elections will be announced after closing the acceptance of nominations.

 

Internal party sources from the main political parties said that their nomination lists are almost being finalized and the lists will be submitted within last two days of accepting nominations.  The Nominations will be closed at 12.00 noon on 19th of this month.   The United Peoples Freedom Alliance, the United National Party and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna are the main parties contesting the elections. Several other political parties are also to contest the elections.

 

Meanwhile, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of elections Gamini Navaratne said maximum measures have been taken to ensure a free and fair election. He said that asecurity network will operate connecting 108 police centers. Holding processions after submitting nominations will be banned. Navaratne said that the relevant parties should ensure that elections laws and regulations are fully observed by the candidates and party supporters.

 

At present there is a peaceful atmosphere in the three provinces. The DIG requested the political parties to ensure that this peaceful atmosphere is maintained until and after the elections. (niz)
