The elections held in all the three provinces have been acknowledged by everyone as a free and fair election with minimum violation of election rules. In the Presidential election held in 2005 President Mahinda Rajapaksa won with a narrow margin of 180,000 but since then in all the 10 elections held in the country, the President’s popularity has been increased tremendously. No other leader in the world has achieved this kind of popularity at any time in the history.
This was stated by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Skill Development Dullas Alahapperuma addressing a Media Conference held at the Mahaweli Centre on Thursday (11). The Media Conference was held to explain about the massive victory achieved by the United People’s Alliance in the elections held for the three provinces of Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Eastern last Saturday.
Speaking about the Eastern Province results the Minister said that the victory achieved by the UPFA in the Eastern Province by getting a majority of seats in the province is a very historical and significant victory. He said that the Tamil National Alliance during their election campaigns said that they will start the 4th step of the Eelam war, and this is the last chance being given by the God . The Minister asked what is the chance that has been given by the God? He said that separatism and Eelamism have been defeated by 69 percent of the people in the cultural area of the Tamils itself and these separatists have got only 31 percent votes in the Eastern province. The Minsiter asked whether there can be any other greater victory for the government than this, and the international community who speak against Sri Lanka on the behest of the overseas Tamil Diaspora and the local elements who sustain on Diaspora money should take notice of the fact that the Tamils themselves have rejected the so called Eelam concept.
The Minister said that even in the majority Tamil populated Batticaloa district, although the TNA got majority of seats they have received only 50% of the votes.
Referring to the historical defeat of the UNP in the Eastern Province he said the General Secretary has once again has shamefully spoken about forming an alliance with the contemporary separatist elements in the TNA. He said that not only in the Eastern Province, but voters in the other provinces too had rejected the United National Party.
The Minister pointed out that the number of seats won by the UNP in all the three provinces have been drastically reduced and a worst fate has befallen on the JVP by reducing the number of seats held in the previous Provincial Councils from 4 to just one seat. (niz).
