The government spokesman and the Minister of Mass Media and Information commenting on the statements made by the Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe and the UNP MP Managala Samaraweera on the impeachment action against the Chief Justice Mrs. Shirani Bandaranaike said that their statements are undermining the constitution of this country, set out as a sovereign nation.
He said that if we are to consult the Commonwealth in respect of all principles, norms and governance, the validity of the constitution of Sri Lanka, which all members of Parliament have taken the oaths to uphold will become futile.
The Minister made these comments in respect of a warning issued by the Opposition Leader that Sri Lanka may loose its membership in the Commonwealth over the impeachment issue and MP Mangala Samaraweera urging the Commonwealth to take urgent action against Sri Lanka over the same issue. (niz)
