The United National Party has found the popularity of President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the main obstacle for their political activities in the country and rejection of them by the people.  In order to overcome this situation the United National Party has made a vicious plan to de-popularize the President by blaming him for everything happening in the country and by spreading malicious propaganda against the President.

This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Economic Development Mr. Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene.  The Deputy Minister pointed out that that the UNP MP Mr. Joseph Michael Perera has revealed this plan addressing the 45th Anniversary of the UNP affiliated Government Press Trade Union Federation held at Sirikotha recently.

The Deputy Minister said that the people should be vigilant about these vicious moves and should not get mislead by such propaganda and emphasized that their only motive is to disrupt the massive development being carried out for the welfare of the future generations.  He said that the international elements dedicated to institute a regime change in the country are also behind this plan.

Mr. Joseph Michael Perera has told the UNP Union that it is only by holding President Mahinda Rajapaksa responsible for all that happens in the country that this Government could be defeated. Explaining in detail the new strategy to discredit the government the UNP veteran has reiterated the need to hold the President responsible for all that happens in the country.

He has said that neither their leader nor his deputy or the UNP itself has the necessary strength to defeat the Government and therefore appealed to party men to commit themselves to the task of discrediting the President.

Deputy leader of the UNP Mr. Sajith Premadasa, General Secretary Mr. Tissa Attanayake and several other UNP leaders have also been present when Mr. Joseph Michael Pererea announced about this plan. (niz)
