The Sri Lanka Freedom Party alleges that those who campaign to protect Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake against being impeached are direct and indirect supporters of the LTTE. The Party points out that that TNA Parliamentarian M. A. Sumanthiram, who is playing a major role to protect the Chief Justice is a person who continuously defended the LTTE in parliament.
Meanwhile, addressing a special media briefing at the Mahaweli Centre Auditorium in Colombo yesterday, Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage pointed out that Mrs. Bandaranayake’s law firm, Neelakandan and Neelakandan appeared for LTTE suspects when they were produced in Court.
The Minister said that the NGO vultures J. C. Weliamuna, Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu, and Nimalka Fernando who take foreign money for their NGOs are also backing the anti-impeachment campaign too. He also said that Wickramabahu Karunaratne, who attended a pro–LTTE rally, which even the TNA refused to attend in Tamil Nadu few months ago, was also backing those attempting to protect the Chief Justice and all these anti-national elements want to create a battle between the judiciary and the legislature, and satisfy the foreign elements that want a regime change in the country.
The Minister also said that an impeachment motion against the CJ was first sought by the JVP and UNP, not by the government. He said that JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti went to the Bribery Commission against the present CJ and UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, at a media conference, had said that she can be impeached over her husband’s crooked deals. The Minister expressed astonishment about the stand now being taken by the UNP and JVP. (niz)
