General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the Minister of Health Mr. Maithreepala Sirisena said that the time has come for changing the preferential voting system. He said that ward system with first past the post voting has now been introduced to the local government elections and it should be extended to the provincial council elections as well.
The Minister said that preferential voting system is a system that tends to buildup personal images and create infight among own party members. The minister emphasized that to build a better political atmosphere in the country the preferential voting system should undoubtedly be abolished.
The minister made these comments participating in a function held at the government factory premises in Kolonnawa to unveil a statue of former parliamentarian Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.
Minister Rajitha Senarathne addressing the function said that the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna which bombed the crest of the democracy in the country, the parliament, has no moral right to speak about democracy. He recalled how this party created chaos and anarchy in the country during the horrendous period of 1989.
Family members of the late Mr. Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra and several Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Parliamentarians attended the function. (niz)
