JVP criticisms condemned

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna always criticizes the government's work thinking they are political experts. However, they will never get the opportunity to rule the country. Despite attempting to fool the masses thinking they are omniscient, they are only the well-frogs and not aware of the huge amount spent by the government to import sugar.

This was stated by the Minister of Sugar Industry Mr. Lukshman Seneviratne and said that the government spends Rs 550 million to import sugar and this is only second to our expenditure for fuel imports.

The Minister said that arrangements are in place to establish 20 new sugar factories in Sri Lanka within the next two years, and the government has decided to allocate 135,000 hectares for sugar cane plantation.

Addressing a ceremony held at Kandaketiya Divisional Secretariat Office, to distribute land deeds to 220 families Minister Seneviratne said arrangements are in place to make Sri Lanka self - sufficient in sugar within the next several years. He said that the Sugar cane is a tree of life similar to coconut tree and sugar cane provides a harvest for five years after cultivation. He said the cynics unaware of its value, are criticizing the sugar industry for the sake of criticizing. (niz)
