UPFA Mayoral Candidate Milinda Moragoda launched his policy platform entitled "Making Colombo a Centre of Excellence", at a news conference today.
Mr.Moragoda intends for the policy platform to be co-created with the participation of citizens of Colombo. He called his platform "an evolving work" and an incomplete document that is only the starting point.
Ideas, comments and suggestions from members of the public will be sought through an on-going dialogue with citizens from all backgrounds carried out via neighborhood discussions, telephone surveys and interaction on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. The input from the public will be incorporated into the revised document that will be issued prior to the election, he said.
Moragoda states that the will bring in a professional and capable administration, which will help ensure that Colombo is a well-run and functioning city, where citizens of all communities and social backgrounds can live and work with dignity and in a peaceful co-existence. He also said that the Colombo City will be made into an "exemplary city", which "will serve as a model for the rest of the country.
Targeting young people in the 18-28 age group, the manifesto promises a comprehensive program to help them establish livelihoods that will include financial and technical assistance to establish small businesses and develop the skills needed to find gainful employment. Job fairs, starting with one in the first 100 days, will be organized in cooperation with the private sector.
It further states that CMC will work with Urban Development Authority to develop a model high-rise community for those relocated. Model community centers with gyms as well as model municipal dispensaries would be set up, and lessons learned from the model projects would be incorporated into the larger upgrading efforts as well.
Minister of Youth Affairs and Skills Development, Dallas Alahapperuma and Professor Rohan Samarajiva, Head of the Policy Planning Group of the Milinda Mayor Campaign also participated in the launch.
The platform clearly states that Moragoda will ensure that "no citizen will be relocated outside metropolitan Colombo' and that it was the Government's plans to provide decent quality housing to those living in shanties on lake and transport and reservations and on Government land.
It will be presented to religious leaders of all faiths commencing with an event at the Narahenpita Abhayaramaya tomorrow.
