Minister Maithreepala Sirisena deplored the United National Party for creating a mayhem situation in the Parliament when the President was presenting the budget proposals with the sole objective for consumption to the foreign diplomats who were in the gallery as invitees.

The Minister said that it was their premeditated plan to disrupt the presentation of the budget. The Minister made these comments addressing a media conference held at the Information Department yesterday.

Minister Sirisena said that the commotion in the Parliament took place upon the signal for starting it was given by the opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe. He said the United National Party now speak very much of democracy and alleges that the government is violating democracy.

He said it is surprising to find that Ranil Wickremasinghe who even held the portfolio of the Prime Minister has forgotten how the United National Party acted during the 1977 to 1994 period. He said the people of this country have not forgotten the way they behaved using the Parliamentary majority to get their political objectives fulfilled.

The Minister reminded that when his party opposed the Agrarian Services Revision Bill in 1993 the United National Party members assaulted the SLFP members including him inhumanly. He reminded that he was dragged on the floor of the House from his flock of hair while some members kicked him and they gave blows to his causing injuries.

He said it is hilarious to find the United National Party that ruled with thuggery, including thuggery within the Parliament making allegations for this government. He said that the UNP due to lack of popular support are attempting to vent their problems to the international community.(niz)
