UNP leadership tussle deepens

Sri Lanka’s one of the oldest  political party the  main opposition United National Party is now facing a leadership tussle as its deputy leader has announced his candidature for the leadership

 

In a special media statement UNP Co- Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya has confirmed that he would accept the invitation extended by Sajith group to contest for party leadership.

 

The present leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will seek re-election as leader when the United National Party’s Working Committee meets on Wednesday.

 

Siri Kotha, the UNP headquarters, is now making arrangements to conduct elections for the post of leader as well as other officials.

 

He also said he was most humbled by the many requests made to him to contest for the post of leader of the United National Party. “More than official positions, I love the United National Party most. I am contesting to both save it and unite it – a pledge I made to all those who have asked me,” the statement further noted.
