    President to preside over inaugural ceremony of national coastal cleaning program Featured

    Even though, Sri Lanka has beautiful coastal areas, we are losing that beauty, due to the increasing coastal pollution in the country.

    The Government has taken steps to implement a national program  to clean up our  local beaches as a solution to this issue.

     

    The Inaugural ceremony of the national coastal cleaning program will be held under patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena on September 19 at 7.00 a.m. at the Galle Face Green.

     

    The Marine Environment Protection Authority has organized the event under the theme of “Sayura Rakimu Api Surekemu” (Save the Ocean for Our Protection).

     

    In parallel to the main program several programs will be held in Gampaha and Kalutara districts on September 19th and other programs will be held in Puttalam, Mannar, Kilinochchi and Jaffna districts on September 21st. On September 22nd programs will be held in Trinco, Batticaloa and Ampara districts. On September 23rd also programs will be held in Matara, Galle and Hambantota districts.

     

    A Press Conference held today(15) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute regarding this national event.

     

    Secretary to the President, Mr. P.B.Abeykoon, Udaya Seneviratne – Secretary of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment , Ranjith Meegahawatha- President of the Marine Environment Protection Authority and other officials also participated in the event.

     

    The aim of the program is to collect and maintain data on marine pollution, increase people’s knowledge on the marine environment, and to make an attitude change among the public to minimize the coastal pollution. (PMU)
