64th National Independence Day celebrations

The 64th National Independence Day celebrations will be held on a grand scale at the Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi Mawatha premises in Anuradhapura today. This year’s theme is ‘The Building of a Miraculous Nation’. President Mahinda Rajapaksa will inaugurate the ceremony at 8.30 am.
Nearly 2,000 invitees will participate at the occasion. The Independence Day Parade will be held with the participation of 2,600 members represented by 1,400 army personnel, 750 Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force personnel and 450 personnel of the Civil Defence Task Force and the youth brigade will also take part in the two hour long march-past. The commanders of the three armed forces, the IGP and the Director General of the Civil Defence Task Force will also attend the ceremony.
The cultural component of the display will be enriched by a pageant comprising 45 cultural troupes representing all ethnic groups in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya and Mannar districts.
Buddhist religious rituals will be conducted at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Hindu and Islamic religious rites at the Kadireshan Kovil and Mohideen Jumma Muslim Mosque while the Catholic religious rituals will be held at the St. Joseph’s Church and the Christian rituals at the Maithree Christian Church in Anuradhapura.
All state institutions are requested to hoist the national flag for one week. The Deyata Kirula Exhibition will be held in Anuradhapura parallel to the 64th National Independence Day. (niz+)
