The government has reiterated that the increase of fuel prices was the result of a situation that arose suddenly.
Minister of Petroleum Industry Susil Premajayanth said that the government always takes steps to provide concessions to the people. Steps will be taken in the future to establish a new oil refinery and to upgrade the existing refinery.
He has said that the government has not concealed anything relating to the oil price increases. The Minister emphasized that a small country like Sri Lanka cannot maintain large oil reserves.
The Minister has emphasized that the opposition when making statements should understand this reality. He said that the opposition is in a bid to mislead the people purely for their sustenance and on the instigations of the foreign powers.
The Minister said that due to the prudent economical management of the government the prices of products manufactured locally remain more static except the prices of imported goods. (niz)
