Sri Lankan women main pillars of national economy

Minister of Foreign Employment Development and Welfare Dilan Perera commending the contributions being made by the overseas employed Sri Lankans for the growth of the national economy said that they are eternal partners of the Sri Lankan economy.

 

He said that their foreign exchange remittances sent by over 1.7 Million overseas employed Sri Lankans have strengthened the national economy.

 

Last year the remittances sent by them amounted to 5,200 million US dollars. The Minister made these comments participating in the first round of discussions with the ‘Overseas Heroes’ association at the Badulla District Secretary office recently.

 

The Minister said that the economy of this country depends in the hands of four groups of women such as foreign employed, tea plucking, garment industry and rubber industry ladies. He said that they are the main pillars of the Sri Lankan economy.  The Minister said the foreign employed ladies take a lead position among these four groups.

 

The chairman of the Foreign Employment Bureau Amal Senadhilankara said ‘Overseas Heroes’ associations will be established throughput the country to help the families of overseas employed personnel. He said that these associations will help to establish a greater coordination between the government and the foreign employed Sri Lankans.  (niz)
