Over 2,000 tourists arrived in Colombo last Friday in the Luxury Liner “Queen Elizabeth”. This is the first time that such a large number of tourists have arrived on a single occasion.
This luxury carrier, owned by the UK based company Cunard, had more than 2000 tourists on board, and they consisted of the British, Australian, Japanese, South African and French nationals.
The local excursion tour operator Gemini Tours and Travels thereafter arranged the tourists to visit the prearranged destinations such as Kandy, Pinnawala and Colombo City Tour.
The luxury liner is scheduled to depart Colombo at 6.00 pm today, to its next destination Mumbai. Queen Elizabeth has 11 decks inclusive of a state-of-the-art swimming pool, an auditorium, a gym and a restaurant.
Having set sail from the UK on the 10th of January this year, the vessel was berthed at Maldives just before resuming its journey to Colombo.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority officials said more than 20 such luxury carriers, had already been programmed to tie up in Colombo by the end of this year. (niz)
