Public Service should be attuned to fulfill people's aspirations - President

President Mahinda Rajapakse emphasized the public service should be attuned to fulfill people’s aspirations along with implementing the huge development plans of the country. He said that the public service should change along with the changing life patterns of the country.
The President made these comments at the ‘Rata Ekata’ programme held at the Temple Trees yesterday. At this function the role of public servants in the face of challenges being faced by the country was explained.
The President said that the Government spends a large amount of money for the systematic developments of the country. Therefore, the public servants should ensure that all unnecessary expenses are curtailed and they should act responsibly, economically and should not encourage any illegal activities. The President also said that the public servants to perform the responsibilities of their service justly and transparently.
Speaking further the President said that in order to face challenges being faced by the country, we should act by thinking on the basis of a nation, and added that he has a great confidence that we can overcome the present challenges.
The President also said that vast development projects are taking place in the country and when something is carried out on a large scale there could be petty shortages. These shortages should be
identified and rectified. He emphasized that not only the political leadership but those who are implementing the development programmes as well should take responsibilities and implement them in proper manner. He pointed out that what is expected from the public servants is to perform their duties properly for the benefit of the future
generation.
Several Ministers, all Chief Ministers, Ministry Secretaries, and a large number of public servants attended this function. (niz+)
