President urges to pass on the fruits of development to ordinary masses

President Mahinda Rajapakse said that similar to the vanquishing of terrorism the determination to make Sri Lanka a Wonder of Asia will not be abandoned under any circumstances. He said the benefits of economic development of this country should equally be distributed to the ordinary masses.
The President made these comments at the function held in the Central Bank Auditorium in connection with releasing the central bank report for 2011.
At this function, the 62nd Annual Report of the Bank printed in all 3 languages was presented to the President by the Governor of the Central Bank Mr. Ajith Nivad Cabral.
The President pointed out that the significant economic progress that has been obtained by the country is a direct result of ending terrorism. He further said that over 3 decades our economy was
weakened by terrorism, and it made many obstacles to country’s development and the economy was made to suffer in various manners.
He said that the government’s determination despite attempts made by international elements helped to succeed in vanquishing this obstacle. It was also said that Sri Lanka embarked on development activities even while fighting the war and the present economic development should be maintained in the future as well. The President pointed out that our economy has progressed at a time the powerful economies in Europe were collapsing.
The President while saying that unemployment and poverty have been reduced, and measures should be taken to further reduce these problems said that the per-capita income has also increased and a speedy development is taking place throughout the country. Work on many development projects is nearing completion and the results will be added to the economy. He pointed out that Sri Lanka is also getting back human resources lost by migration due to the war. Private sector investments are also on the increase, and there is a strong foundation for the future. The President urged that all sectors must make firm determination to act with dedication for the development of the country.
Senior Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, Deputy Minister of Finance Geethanjana Gunewardena, and several others attended the function.
