Sri Lanka saga of abduction entirely a drama - Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena

DSC 9245Sri Lankan government today describing the disappearance and surfacing of the JVP breakaway group leader Kumar Gunaratnam dismissed the entire episode as a well orchestrated drama.

Premakumar Gunaratnam leader of the (FSP) Frontline Socialist Party was reportedly abandoned in Dematagoda in Colombo by a group who had come in a van while Dimuthu Attygalla was dropped off at the side of a road after their abduction on April 7th.

The Actg Minister of Mass Media and Information Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said that all these stories about abductions, disappearances and reappearances are part of a well planned internationally assisted conspiracy to discredit the government and the people should be vigilant about these international conspirators. He said that this disappearance drama also gave a turbo boost to the propaganda activities of the newly formed Frontline Socialist Party.

The minister recalling the connection the breakaway group had with the JVP said that when the split in the JVP surfaced and when it was questioned from the JVP leader Somawansa Amerasinghe at that time about Kumar Mahattaya, Amerasinghe had said that he does not know such a person and that there are no gentlemen in their party.

Contrary to this, media reports revealed subsequently that he held discussions with this same Kumar Mahattaya alias Kumar Gunaratnam from night to dawn to sort out the split in the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna.

At the same time, during the same period Pubudu Jagoda, a Central Committee member of the JVP had told the media that Kumar Gunaratnam was the brother of their slain Peradeniya Campus leader and he was the Trincomalee leader of the party during the 88/89 period rendering an enormous service for the building of their party.

This was stated by the Acting Minister of Mass Media and Information Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene at a media conference held in the Information Department this morning. Speaking on the disappearance and reappearance of Kumar Gunaratnam and Dimutu Attygalle, the Minster said that this person Kumar Gunaratnam has walked into the CID post at Dematagoda around 10.00 p.m. on the 9th and has told the officials that he is Kumar Gunaratnam and he wants to leave for Australia. On questioning he has admitted that he is also Noel Mudalige.

The Minister said that within a short time the officials of the Australian High Commission have arrived at the Police Station and had made arrangements to send him back to Australia on the morning of the following day. When he was taken to the airport the Australian HC officials have presented his original passport and it indicates that the passport was either in the High Commission or it had been given to them by the Frontline Socialist Party.

The Minister said that the Government has written to Australian HC to pay the penalty due from the person as he did not have money to pay the penalty for violating the immigration laws

"It is intriguing to find the special interest shown by the Australian HC in this case".the Minister said

Speaking further the Minister said that when Champika Somaratne, the wife of this person was questioned at the airport a few months ago she has said that she is not the wife of Kumar Gunaratnam and she is the wife of Daskon and she does not know anything about Kumar Gunaratnam. But two days ago she has told the Australian media that the Sri Lankan government has abducted her husband Kumar Gunaratnam and had requested the Australian media to help her trace the whereabouts of her husband.

Similarly Kumar Gunratnam’s mother has told the media that she had not seen her son for the last several years and she was not aware whether he is living or of his whereabouts. Despite this she has blamed the government saying that the government has abducted her son and requested the people to help her to find her son.

The Minister said that this person Kumar Gunaratnam has obtained several Australian passports in various names such as Noel Mudalige, Daskon and Kumar Gunaratnam and made visits to Sri Lanka several times and spent a quit lot of time in Sri Lanka.

Referring to the media conference held by Miss Dimuthu Attygalle yesterday, the other person which the government was alleged to have been abducted along with Kumara Gunaratnam, the Minister pointed out that she has told the media conference that she was left free by the group that abducted her and she suspects that the abducted group could be from the JVP or it may be some other group.

Reminding about the 88/89 period the Minister pointed out that JVP has a record of abducting people and murdering them but they operated as two groups in these activities. He said that the political activities were carried out by the JVP proper and the killings and destructions were carried out by their armed group called Deshapremi Janatha Vyaparaya and the JVP neither condemned the killing of the group called DJV nor admitted that the DJV was a part of their organization.

Responding to questions raised by media personnel the Minister pointed out that the government will take further action about these incidents diplomatically with the Australian government and further investigations are being carried out by the Police.
