Addressing the mammoth May Day rally of the United People’s Freedom Alliance, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the unity of the working masses is the strength to build national unity. He said the time has come to commit for the national security while improving the status of the offices and the work places. He pointed out that local and international conspirators are attempting to snatch the victory of the people and the working masses in the name of human rights, and plunge this nation to become a colony of the imperialists which the working masses will never allow to happen.
The president said that by uniting the working masses we are building for all nationalities and people of all religious faiths the atmosphere to live together and to revive the country that had been set back for several years. The President said that the people who had gone to Jaffna to hold May Day there should first apologize for the crimes they committed in burning the Jaffna Library, and for riggings elections held there.
The President emphasized that they are able to hold the May Day in Jaffna because of the conducive atmosphere created by his government and his leadership by liberating the North from the terrorist clutches. He said it is because of this government that they are able to have boat tours in Jaffna and to visit places that they were unable to visit in the past when it was under the sway of the terrorists although they were having their own government.
The President said that he believes in the universal franchise and he will never allow to topple the government through conspiracies or through foreign interference. He requested the people to repose trust in the government. He said the government is endeavouring to build this country for the farmers of this country, for the working masses of this country, for all people of this country and for the future generation as promised in the Mahinda Chintana. He urged the people to forget about all differences relating to nationalities, caste and creed and join hands together to build this nation.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that there is no leadership in this country other than the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to take this country forward towards a massive economic development process, to solve the remaining issues and to defeat the challenges being leveled against the country by the international forces in connivance with the local stooges of theirs.
The Treasurer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Minister Dallas Alahapperuma said that although they expected around 300 thousand people to gather in Colombo for the UPFA May Day rally people in their thousands have come from all parts of the country making the number to over five hundred thousand. He said that this large gathering clearly indicate that the people of all nationalities and all categories have accepted the fact that UPFA is the platform to take the country forward, to consolidate unity in the country, to create reconciliation among the communities and to provide equality to everyone who speak different languages.
The leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Minister Rauf Hakeem said that they will not allow in any manner for the extremist forces to raise their heads and shatter the unity in the country. He said that there is a great task to be performed in the post conflict period, and he is clearly stating that his party’s maximum support will be extended to the government to achieve all these objectives.
The leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that he would like to remind Ranil Wickremasinghe and his cronies that it is the UNP that has a history of banning holding of May Day in this country. He urged the gathering to consolidate their unity and march forward together to usher in a prosperous country for the future generation.
The leader of the National Freedom Front Minister Wimal Weerawansha said that the May Day rally of theirs is a rally devoted to march together for building the country and whereas the rally of the United National Party held in Jaffna is a rally dedicated to revive an Eelam, to enslave the masses to become the subordinates of the imperialists, to make this country a backyard of the imperialists, mooted to privatize state properties, and to facilitate the capitalist class to suppress the freedom and rights of the working masses.
