Pooneryn developed as a major town in the North

Pooneryn in the Kilinochchi District is being developed as a new town, and construction of several administrative buildings is being carried out in this connection.
Pooneryn is located in the centre area of Mannar – Navatkuli A-32 road and this road is now being reconstructed. It is also situated in the Jaffna-Wanni route.
The opening of the 288 meter Sangupitti Bridge connecting Karaitivu and Pooneryn constructed at a cost of Rs. 800 million by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 16th January last year, has significantly increased traffic to and from Jaffna passing through Pooneryn town as this bridge shortened the distance to Jaffna by about 120 kilometers and reduced the travel time drastically
The building of the new town is being carried out under the Uthuru Wasanthaya programme and among the administrative buildings being constructed include the pradeshiya sabha building, public library, fishery inspection office , post office , livestock office and the agrarian services center.
The construction work of the Pooneryn Hospital for which foundation stone was laid by the President on 11th July last year is almost completed and it is scheduled to be vested with the people by end of this month. The Pooneryn Maha Vidyalaya is being constructed under the 1000 schools development programme with three two storied buildings.(niz)
