President join the spectators at the 15th AJAC

President Mahinda Rajapaksa also joined the spectators at the 15th Asian Junior Athletic Championship being held at the Sugathadasa Stadium last afternoon.
The Sri Lankan athlete Viraj Randeniya won a bronze medal from the Hurdles event yesterday. He finished the event in 13.9 seconds. This is the first time a Sri Lankan athlete has been able to finish this event in less than 14 seconds. Viraj Randeniya is a student of the Ranabima Royal College in Peradeniya.
Another Bronze Medal was won yesterday by the Sri Lankan athlete R.A.D.Jayamini from the 300 meter women’s steeplechase event.
At present Sri Lanka has won two gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals. China is leading medals table with 8 Golds, 5 Silver and one Bronze medal. China Thaipei is in the second place with 4 Gold, and two Silver medals.
Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the Deputy Chairman of the World Athletic Association Al Hamal and the Secretary of the Asian Athletic Association Morris Nicholas also visited the Stadium yesterday to view the events.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Province Maheepala Herath has decided to award Rs. 500,000 to Shivanthi Kumari who won a Gold medal from the 400 meter womens event at the 15th Asian Junior Athletic Championship. She entered the national and international sports arena from the Hiriwadunna and St. Joseph Girls College in Kegalle. A special function to welcome this athlete has also been arranged at the Kegalle Urban Council Hall. (niz).
