membership drive in the East, Sri Lanka Ministers visit to Batticaloa

Sri Lanka ruling party on a membership drive in the East Sri Lanka Ministers will visit the eastern Batticaloa district on Friday and Saturday on a membership drive. Cabinet spokesman Media Mininster Keheliya Rambukwella said that Ministers will visit the east the next two days
"17 ministers will visit house to house in the Batticaloa district on 15 and 16 June in an attempt to enroll 10,000 new members to the SLFP" Mr Rambukwella said.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the main party in the ruling People's Alliance coalition government. The minister said that the government is currently having discussion with the Chief Ministers of few Provincial Councils on the possibility of having early elections.
The Eastern Provincial Council had recently passed a resolution to go for an early election before its tenure expires. North Central and Sabaragamuwa are the two other Councils of which early elections are expected.
"The constitution makes provisions for early elections and successive governments have made used of this provisions and it is not illegal" the Minister said in reply to a question raised, on the allegation by the main opposition UNP that the Government is selective in calling for PC elections.
