President concludes a successful official visit to Cuba

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has successfully concluded official discussions with the Cuban Deputy President Marino Murio. During the discussions held at the Cuban Revolutionary Square the Cuban Deputy President has focused much attention on Sri Lanka’s current political and social status and economic development.



Both leaders have discussed on strengthening health, educational and economic development between the two countries. The presidential media coordinating secretary Wijayananda Herath said that agreement was reached on getting Cuban training for improving boxing in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, an MOU on coconut development was signed between Cuba and Sri Lanka yesterday. It was signed by Minister Professor G.L. Peiris and the Agricultural Minister of Cuba Gushtanio Rodrigyo.

The MOU covers deploying of Cuban Nano Technology to develop the local coconut cultivation and eradication of insect menace. The MOU also covers technical mechanisms for Copra manufacture and manufacture of by-products using coir. It also covers conducting research on producing energy using coconut waste products.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa also visited the house of the Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevera yesterday and had cordial discussions with the wife and son of Che Guevera. Mrs. Guevera presented two books written by Che Guevera to the President. After concluding a successful visit to Cuba the President and his delegation left for Brazil yesterday. (niz)
