World Green Summit Rio+20 begins today

The 20th World Green Summit will commence in the Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro today. The summit has been named as ‘Rio plus 20’ summit. The Rio+20 gathering comes 20 years after the Earth Summit, also held in the Brazilian city. It was called with the aim of putting humanity on a more sustainable pathway, including alleviating poverty.
The main objective of the Summit is to discuss climatic problems being faced by the world and to explore the effect of these problems on development. The summit is to focus attention especially on combined effects of climate change, resource scarcity, loss of bio diversity and echo system resilience.
One of the themes of the summit is green economy for sustainable development and alleviation of poverty. The summit will also discuss under the theme of formulation of the institutional framework for sustainable development.
President Mahinda Rajapakse after concluding a successful visit to Cuba has arrived in Brazil to attend the summit. Heads of States from 130 countries and over 50,000 representatives will attend the main session of the summit.
The President is to submit proposals relating to the active environmental plan. He also expects to meet several Heads of State attending the summit and hold bilateral discussions.
Minister of Environment Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Minister of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Dallas Alahapperuma and Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayaka are also attending the summit with the President.(niz+)
