The Leader of the House, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that it is surprising to find the opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe behaving as a person who was not in the country during the horrendous period from 1987 to 1990 and the period from 2001 to 2004 in which there were colossal crimes in the country.
He said that however, these sad and inhuman periods will never be forgotten by the people of this country. The Minister said that it was with the knowledge of Wickremasinghe that not only abductions, missing of persons and inhuman murders were carried out in the country but even the torture chambers such as Batalanda existed on an official level.
The Minister said that it is surprising to find Wickremasinghe saying now, that there is a sad and dangerous situation in the country.
The Minister made these comments in the Parliament yesterday in response to a statement made by the opposition leader about the recent incident at Katuwana.
The Minister said that special police investigations are now being held about the Katuwana incident. He said that the Police have been able to apprehend many suspects alleged to be involved in many recent crimes.
The Minister further said that the bankruptcy of the opposition politics is clearly shown by the statements they make saying that certain incidents have political connections. The Minister emphasized that this government will never exert political pressure on behalf of criminals. (niz)
