President Mahinda Rajapaksa viewed the Esala Maha Sisu Perahera from Temple Trees yesterday, organized to commemorate the 2,600th Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi.
The perahera which commenced from Mahanama College proceeded through Liberty circle, Galle Road and reached Temple Trees and from there through Rotunda Gardens via Nawam Mawatha reached Gangarama Temple.
The Perahera was organized for the second consecutive year by the Education Ministry with the objective of promoting the artistic talents of the children and inculcate collelctive behaviour and discipline among school children. Over 12,500 schoolchildren of all races and religions representing 302 schools in the country participated in the event.
Senior Urban Affairs Minister AHM Fowzie, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Labour and Labour Relations Minister Gamini Lokuge were also present.
